Catholic Radio’s 3 Hidden Spiritual Benefits
Written by catholicradioblog on November 13, 2025
Just by tuning in to Catholic radio you will receive content that is True and Good. You will gain:
- New knowledge of Scriptures, the Catechism, Church documents, and the magisterium of the Catholic Church
- Increased understanding of the Catholic Church’s teachings on both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition
- New perspectives on everyday matters of life, family situations, and even events from around the world.
But there are other advantages to listening to program as well. Here are three spiritual benefits of Catholic radio that you may not have considered:
1. Awareness and Sorrow for Sin
Sometimes we know that what we are doing is wrong. And we do it anyway. That is sin. It could be a sin of commission, something we did. A sin of omission points to what we ought to have done but failed to do.
Venial Sin
This is something that is not overtly serious, but thoughtless. Laziness, gossiping, small lies, vanity, envy, overindulgence in something, anger, being overly critical are all examples of venial sins. These sins weaken our relationship with God.
Mortal Sin
This type of sin, on the other hand, indicates an intentional turning away from God. The consequence of mortal sin is the loss of sanctifying grace with the potential to be separated from God for eternity. There are three conditions for a sin to be considered mortal:
- It must be grave matter, meaning a seriously wrong act
- A person must have full knowledge that the act is grave and wrong
- There must be deliberate consent, meaning a free choice to commit the act
These types of sin are tied to the Ten Commandments. Putting something before God and making it an idol is against the First Commandment. Other examples of mortal sin are stealing, murder and abortion, adultery, blasphemy, bitter or vindictive gossip, abusive anger, and intense hatred.
Sometimes we don’t know what we are doing is wrong. Maybe we were never taught a particular aspect of the Catholic Faith, we didn’t understand it, or we have forgotten.
Persisting in Sin Is a Risk
Living in sin, even venial, dulls the conscience. This can be compared to looking through dirty glasses. Religious fervor can wane and without noticing, one may drift away from God.
Catholic Radio Teaches the Truth of Christ and His Church
We become what we listen to. As we take in the teachings of the Church derived from Scripture and Tradition, we not only learn what is true and good, we learn to hate sin.
2. Increased Appreciation of the Sacraments
Just like children, adults don’t like getting caught for doing something wrong. We feel bad. This can be due to negative consequences of our behavior or actions.
We may feel guilty, ashamed, or even indignant. It’s easy to react in anger when we’re in denial that we’ve caused our own consequences.
However, listening to Catholic radio, because it proclaims the Truth, is an efficacious remedy. When we learn more about sin and how it enslaves us, a change occurs.
Godly Sorrow and Contrition for Sin
When we hear about the love God has for each of us, it can soften our hard hearts.
As we ponder the love Jesus has for us and how He died to set us free from sin and death, it can bring us to a place of humility.
Recognizing that our sin offends God can set a spark on fire in our hearts, leading to a desire to turn back to Him.
We will then be inspired to repent, express true sorrow for our sins, and seek God’s forgiveness.
Receiving the sacrament of reconciliation is a gift from God that beckons to us all. We all fail. We are all sinners.
Going to confession breaks the ties to mortal sin and provides healing for our souls. It also provides grace to help us avoid temptation and future occasions to sin.
3. Hunger for What is Uplifting for the Mind and Soul
After we recognize our own sinfulness, confess our transgressions, and amend our lives, we will be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
God never leaves us. We are the ones who step away from God and His unfathomable love for us. When our relationship is restored, we will seek out things compatible with God and start striving for a virtuous life.
We won’t just want to learn about God, we will desire to know and experience God. We will enter into a relationship with the Holy Trinity. This desire can fuel the hunger to align ourselves with the transcendental qualities of God.
This means as we orient our intellect, our will, and our imagination towards God, we will appreciate and seek out the True, the Good, and Beautiful, all of which come from and reflect the Holy Trinity.
