5 Powerful Ways Catholic Radio Can Help with Burnout

Jesus Describes Himself Using Metaphors
Throughout the gospels Jesus explains Who He is and His relationship with us using images. Many of these are found in the Gospel of John. Jesus is:
- The Bread of Life (John 6:35)
- The Light of the world (John 8:12)
- The Gate for the sheep (John 10:7)
- The Good Shepherd (John 10:14)
- The True Vine (John 15:1)
Catholic Radio helps us reflect on these passages daily, reminding us of the many ways Jesus reveals Himself to us through scripture.
However, did you know that in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus uses imagery comparing Himself to…an ox?
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (RSVCE, Matthew 11:28-30).
Jesus: a Servant Who Sacrificed Himself to Alleviate Your Suffering
Although Jesus doesn’t directly compare Himself to an ox, imagery points to this symbolism.
- First, in the Old Testament, the ox was commonly sacrificed to the Father as an act of dedication to God, atonement for sin, and thanksgiving. These sacrifices of the Old Testament foretold the greatest sacrifice in the New Testament: that of Jesus on the Cross.
- Second, a manger, or hay trough, was in barns for feeding larger farm animals, like cattle. It was where Jesus was laid after He was born. The Good News Incarnate first went to the poor.
- Finally, Jesus invites those who work, who are burdened, to take His yoke. This may not sound comforting! However, young, inexperienced oxen were often paired with older oxen for training. When Jesus invites His followers to learn from Him, He points to Himself as Teacher and Master.
Because He is “gentle and lowly in heart”, He is approachable. His yoke is easy and the burden light because He is like the experienced ox. That ox bears more of the weight, strain, and burden so that of the younger ox is lighter. The followers of Jesus are like the young ox.
Catholic Radio Can Help When You Experience Burnout
Everyone goes through seasons of exhaustion, whether physical, mental, emotional, or a combination. This can lead to lack of focus, chronic distraction, inefficiency, negativity, and inability to truly rest and recharge.
Burnout occurs over time and sometimes a situation seems hopeless. But Luke 1:37 reminds us that with God, nothing is impossible! Jesus is the Divine Physician. Catholic radio always points to God and Hope. Here are five ways Catholic radio can help when you experience burnout:
1. Catholic Radio Broadcasts Peace Through Prayers
Every day you can listen to and pray with the Holy Mass, the rosary, and the Divine Mercy chaplet. You’ll also hear prayers tucked between programs such as prayers for the holy souls in purgatory, prayers for the pope, and other various litanies.
Pray with Mary and the saints, and ask for their intercession. As an act of sacrifice, pray for the intentions of others in the world and in purgatory. Be an active participant in the communion of saints. God is never outdone in generosity. When you pray for others, God will be with you and grant you His Peace.
2. Priests Communicate Jesus’ Love and Peace on Catholic Radio
Have you ever wondered if the gospel message of Jesus Christ is outdated? Or have you thought that learning the catechism could be boring? Nothing could be further from the truth! Two of many of our programs that communicate the Love and Peace of Christ are:
- The Reason for Our Hope, hosted by Fr. Larry Richards. He is a gifted communicator and is able to seamlessly connect people, circumstances, and challenges from Bible times with those of today to infuse listeners with hope.
- Christ is the Answer, with Fr. John Riccardo, focuses on the catechism, which is, at its core, the teachings of Jesus Christ. This program is a dynamic explanation of what the Catholic Church holds sacred. Fr. Riccardo also connects the wisdom of the Church with some of life’s tough questions and situations.
3. Reception of the Sacraments is Encouraged on Catholic Radio as a Remedy for Burnout
Living out baptismal promises. Regular confession. Reception of Jesus in the Eucharist and regular Adoration. These spiritual practices are spoken of frequently on Catholic radio as a remedy for burnout.
