The Gift of Catholic Radio: 3 Lessons to Learn and Pass On

There are things we all take for granted without question, and the presence of Catholic radio across the airwaves is one of them. If you are driving across the country, you can oftentimes pick up a signal and hear familiar programs. However, this was not always the case.

Everything starts with one person…I don’t care if you’re 5 or 105, God from all eternity chose you to be where you are, at this time in history, to change the world.

1. You Are Important In God’s Plan

Rita Rizzo was born in 1923 and endured challenging circumstances as a young girl and teenager. After experiencing personal miracles she was led to religious life, knowing that God cared for her personally and had a plan for her.

Taking the name Sister Mary Angelica when she professed her religious vows, she experienced more setbacks with her health. After prayer, a promise she made, and another miraculous healing, Sister Angelica’s goal was to start a monastery in the southern United States, as she promised Our Lord she would.

St. Paul says in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” In His sovereignty, God could have placed you anywhere in the world at any time in human history.

However He chose for you to be here, now, in your present circumstances. What are your spiritual gifts and talents? How can you best use them in your everyday circumstances in your own corner of the world? Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom, knowledge, and clarity.

2. Believe God’s Word and Step Out In Faith

Simply believing in the existence of God is not exactly what I would call a commitment. After all, even the devil believes that God exists. Believing has to change the way we live.

Do you believe God? The question isn’t if you believe IN God, but do you believe God in what is proclaimed in Sacred Scripture, and Who Jesus says He is? Trusting that God loves you and acting accordingly is an integral part of the Christian life.

In 1981 Mother Angelica began (with no experience) to turn the monastery garage into a television studio where EWTN began broadcasting. 11 years later shortwave radio service was launched followed by worldwide AM/FM radio service in 1996.

How is God leading YOU to step out in faith in a new way for Him?

Unless you are willing to do the ridiculous, God will not do the miraculous. When you have God, you don’t have to know everything about it; you just do it.

3. Become a Saint

Where most men work for degrees after their names, we work for one before our names: “St.” It’s a much more difficult degree to attain. It takes a lifetime, and you don’t get your diploma until you’re dead.

We are all called to be saints. This means answering the call of the Great Commission of Jesus Christ to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). How that is accomplished is unique to each of us.

Further, we are called to push through difficult challenges. Mother Angelica suffered from physical pain in her body for almost her entire life and yet said:

Sometimes my worst day—one filled with pain and suffering—in the eyes of God, is my best day if I’ve born it cheerfully and I’ve born it with love.

Mother Angelica brought Catholic television and radio to the United States and the world. However, her greatness lies not in her earthly accomplishments, but in her trust and obedience in God. All was made possible because of Him.

What are your most severe challenges in your physical or spiritual life? God may use those to sanctify you. What might be accomplished through you if you cooperated with God despite difficult circumstances?
